The 2009 Brass Rat

The 2009 Brass Rat Friday evening was the unveiling of the Class of 2009 Brass Rat. Ring Premiere, as its called, is one of the largest milestones of the MIT undergrad experience. A lot of you probably have class rings from high school, or might even be in the process of picking one out right now. If yours is anything like mine, its got a pretty simple design. Theres a birthstone with my high schools name winding around it on the front, my class year and high schools symbol on one side, and a custom design on the other (mine has my name and a field hockey symbol). Here at MIT, we do thingsa little differently. First, some history: the MIT class ring is officially called the Standard Technology Ring, and has been affectionately nicknamed the Brass Rat. Its not brass and its not a rat, dont ask me. (If anyone else has an explanation for this, by all means, drop me a note.) Its been an Institute tradition since about 1929 for each class to customize the ring to reflect their time here. At the end of the freshmen year, about a dozen students are appointed to the Ring Committee (by the class council, I believe). The Ring Committee spends the first half of the sophomore year designing the ring, which is unveiled at an event called Ring Premiere. I was really excited about Ring Premiere, until the Ring Committee accidentally leaked the design early (oops!) so I heard some gossip about some of the rings details beforehand. This ruined the fun a little bit, but Im glad I went to the Premiere, which was a really fun experience. Now for the fun part: Class of 2009 Ring Design A friend of mine was quoted in the Techs article about the ring leak (Carlos 09s comment was rather.colorful) saying, Thats gross and disgusting. I found this hilarious (partly because Carlos is pretty hilarious to begin with), and when I talked to him about it, he said that he mentioned a bunch of positive things too, but somehow the reporter forgot to mention those. So Id just like to get my actual opinion of the ring out there before my name appears in the Tech in a similar fashion on Tuesday. =) (The girl sitting in front of me during the Premiere happened to be a Tech reporter, and I think she probably asked for my opinion because she heard me making loud and sometimes sarcastic comments the whole time. Hey, I missed Charm School this year.) Overall, I like the ring. Designing a ring for 1000 people cant be easy, and no one is ever going to be 100% satisfied. I definitely have some problems with it, (which Ill elaborate on in a minute) but there are some really cool things as well. Each ring typically has 5 components: the skylines on the sides of the ring, the map on the underside, the bezel (the front or top of the ring), the seal shank and the class shank (which go on opposite sides). Here are the images, along with my comments. Anything in quotes was taken directly from the design description page linked above. The Skylines The Cambridge skyline is shown at night, in tribute to the fact that MIT students are primarily nocturnal. =) The Hackers Map Each class has a hackers map on the underside of their ring, which depicts all of the campus buildings as well as the underground tunnels that connect them. One neat detail specific to the 09 ring: building 6 is not connected to anything, to commemorate the fact that it has been inaccessible due to construction since our arrival. Class Shank The class shank is usually centered around the image of the Great Dome and Killian Court, and our design is no different. My thoughts on the 09 Class Shank: The Awesome: Pluto! In solemn remembrance of the former ninth planet, Pluto is engraved to the left of the Great Dome. =) Also cool is the dollar bill behind the columns in Killian Court- back in the 70s, a student pained a big mural of a dollar bill over the cashiers office door. Years later, the cashiers office was moved, and the space was renovated and made into a lounge. There was a huge controversy over this, as many students resented the removal of the mural as an attack on MIT culture. (You can read some of the Techs coverage of the story here.) In the end, the mural was removed, but a small image of it, along with an explanation, was left on the glass wall of the new lounge. While I personally was not upset by the removal of the mural, Im glad the Ring Committee included a tribute to it on the Brass Rat. Also, below Building 10 is an ambigram. Its an awesome idea that didnt really come across so well, but basically the image reads punt, until you turn the ring over to reveal the word tool- both of which are MIT slang for screw around instead of doing work and work really hard, respectively. The Less Awesome: The zero with wings (to represent the fact that were the last class to be able to abbreviate our year with a 0, as in 09) and the T token (on the left of the inscription, included to symbolize the retirement of the token in favor of the card form of payment) areweird. Theres also supposed to be a fire department symbol to the right of the inscription in tribute to the fire truck hack, which would have been awesome. Unfortunately, the symbol is so small and obscure that its impossible to recognize, which makes its inclusion pretty much pointless, in my opinion. The infinity on the dome is also kind of silly- its supposed to represent the infinite possibilities at MIT or some such thing, but I think they could have come up with something much cooler for such a prominent symbol (the 08 ring has their class number in binary, for example). Bezel The bezel is the top of the ring and always features the Tech mascot, the Beaver. The bezel often has the most room for personalization. Cool things: The motto IHTFP is artfully hidden in the beavers tail. Look along the up and right diagonals if you dont see it right away- its hidden pretty well. Theres also a canon in the background to represent MITs unique hacking community and rivalry with other institutions. Then theres this line: The gnawed logs in the lower left represent the hard work of the beaver and of MIT students. Below the fallen log are eight ivy leaves crushed by the beavers accomplishments. =) Uncool things: The hands of the watch have been replaced with the male and female symbols, to represent how gender balanced the class is. Ill explain my take on this in just a minute Seal Shank The seal shank features the official MIT seal. Theres also some room for customization, and most classes add a few symbols to this shank. The seal shank is the part of the ring that has the most potential for controversy lately. Heres a quick history lesson: the official MIT seal shows two figures- a scholar and an artisan to represent the two parts of MITs official motto Mens et Manus (Mind and Hand). The Class of 2002 Ring Committee modified the seal on their ring to include a woman. The Class of 04 originally intended to do the same, but when the design was leaked early and the class reacted negatively, they changed the seal back. More recently, the Class of 07 modified the seal, and there are some interesting quotes from students in the article in the Tech about the 07 Brass Rat. Heres my take on the whole thing: I personally would have preferred to have a woman on the ring. Why? Because Im a woman, and I go here, and when I look at the ring and seal without a woman, I dont see myself. So yes, Im a little disappointed that the seal features two men. But heres the thing- Im still going to buy one, for crying out loud. If no one had ever put a woman on the seal, I doubt Id be organizing some crusade to get one on there. But the fact is that once the 02 Ring Committee opened that can of worms, theres no shutting it. The thing that really, really, really ticks me off (to use the polite term) is how angry other people get when the topic is raised. People walked out of the 07 Ring Premiere, all because the class ring had a person of the female gender on it. Are you freaking kidding me? They tried to put together a petition to have an alternate version of the ring. They were that offended by a symbol indicating an even gender ratio at MIT that they never wanted to w ear it. That may not sound so bad, but youve got to understand that the Brass Rat is a BIG DEAL here. Nearly everyone buys one and wears it for years and years. I met an alum from the class of fifty-something last semester who showed off his ring to me. A lot of people claim that the seal should be unaltered because its tradition. Its always been my personal opinion that tradition is a silly thing to hold as an absolute. I love that MIT has so many traditions here- like the Brass Rat, and hacking, and smaller cultural symbols like IHTFP and so on. But I see no reason why traditions cant change. I mean, once upon a time it was tradition for only men to apply to college in the first place. Should we have held on to that particular tradition? When Melis blogged about last years Ring Premeire, she said she was most upset by the members of her class who cheered at the reveal of the all-male seal, and I have to agree (there was a similar reaction to this years reveal, although I think Meliss classs reaction was stronger). I may not be offended very much if theres no woman on the ring, but I am offended by the people who stood and cheered because there wasnt one. Just like Melis, it really ticks me off that people at a place like MIT arent more open-minded to progress and change, and would be offended by the alteration of an MIT symbol that does not relfect forty-something percent of the student body simply because it breaks with tradition. So yeah, I do think the male and female symbols on the stopwatch are a cheap cop-out to dealing with the actual issue. /rant Like I said, I really do like the ring. I would have preferred a woman on the seal, but Im not adamant about it. I am upset about peoples reaction to that whole issue, but theres not much that can be done about that, is there? In the end, there were some awesome icons (Pluto and the canon were my favorites) and Im just excited to get my very own piece of MIT history in April. A Brief Look at Iran - 865 Words

The first thing to find was some basic information about Iran. I found out that Iran is located in southwestern Asia. Iran is 1,648,000 square kilometers and extends 2,250 kilometers, which is slightly bigger than Alaska. Iran’s estimated population for 2015 is 81,422,000. The language for Iran is Persian, Arabic words, or dialects of Turkish. The climate in Iran is hot summers and cold winters across the plateau (Iran, Encyclopedia). Spring starts on the Persian New Year’s day. The temperature for the capital in January averages from 7 degrees Fahrenheit to a high of 45 degrees. In July averages from 72 degrees 99 degrees. Throughout the year, they get 40 to 60 inches of rainfall. The plateau doesn’t exceed 12 inches of rainfall. The erosion causes desertification (Iran, Encyclopedia). The second thing I wanted to learn was what happened in Iran’s history. I discovered that Medes and Persians occupied Iran in the 1500s BC. The Persian King nam ed Cyrus overthrew Medes. The Russians and the British fought for economic control during the Qajar Dynasty. On January 16, 1979, the Shah and his family fled Iran. On November 4, 1979, revolutionary militants invaded the United States embassy in Tehran. On January 20, 1981, 52 American Hostages were released ending 444 clays in imprisonment (Iran, Info). This money is used as operation, venue construction, and infrastructure costs specifically for the construction/renovation of the stadium, Olympic Village, roads, railway lines, airports, security, accommodation, feeding, and transportation. It is a policy requirement that Olympic costs are footed by the tax payers, Olympic Games, debts, and the International Olympic Committee (IOC). For instance, IOC has a responsibility to disburse at least 90% of its resources for Olympic Games. On the other hand, tax payers from the host nation or city are also obliged to contribute for the games. This justifies why the tax payers contributions amounted to US$11.6 billion in 2016, US$4.4 billion in 2012, and US$ 2.3 billion in 2010 (Prayag, Hosany, Nunkoo Alders 2013). However, despite this huge spending, Olympic Games have been bringing a mix of fortunes to the host countries. Apart from benefiting the host by building its reputation, enhancing infrastructural development and boosting the prosperity of its tourism sector, Olympic Games have, on different occasions, proven to be profitable or unprofitable investments because of the profits and losses realized. Whereas the 2006 Turin, 2004 Athens, and 2000 Sidney events brought massive losses to the respective host nations, the 2010 Vancouver and 2008 Beijing events realized a profit of US$70 million and US$ 146 million respectively (Agha, Fairley Gibson 2012). Based on this analysis, it should be concluded that the hosting of an Olympic event is a viable venture that benefits the individual athletes, local business community, and the host government at large. Despite the challenges, these parties emerge as winners because at least each of them has some benefits to enjoy as a result of the event. Participating Country As a member of the commonwealth group of nations, Australia has been participating in each of the Olympic Games. Meaning, just like any other participating country, Australia has to heavily invest in Olympics. This explains why, over the years, the commonwealth government of Australia has been, through entities like the Australian Institute of Sport and Australian Sports Commission, spending a lot of money to promote sporting activities in the country (Boykoff 2013). Precisely, the government allocates a total of $250 million annually to the Australian Sports Commission to use in sporting activities in the country. Out of this money, $ 100 million is used in the training of elite sportsperson participating in Olympic Games. Since the London Olympic Games, the government has been spending $32 million on Olympic. $ 27.5 million of this amount has been allocated to the sports commission to use as direct grants to the athletes while undergoing training. Since this is government money, it is directly sourced from taxes. Meaning, it is the tax payers whose resources are used to finance Olympic Games (Vanwynsberghe, Surborg Wyly 2013). When it comes to returns, it has been argued that the government spends too much money on Olympic Games. This argument is based on the fact that during each event, Australia does not get commensurate number of medals. Meaning, the costs are higher than the returns. Conclusion Although Olympic Games have been labeled as a costly affair, it should be encouraged because it has lots of benefits to the host and participating nations. Apart from helping in the development of infrastructure and tourism sector, Olympic Games can also benefit a participating country. Australias participation in Olympics should not only be looked from a financial perspective. Heavy investment in Olympic Games is useful because it encourages statesmanship, national glory and pride. I was looking forward to finally getting to go to school again. Indiana University was opening a campus in South Bend, only about 5 miles away from my house and I was hoping to go there. I eventually became the poster child for the new campus. I wanted to go to college and then medical school at Indiana University to become a General Practitioner. My job at the Post Office was during World War II, and one of my responsibilities was to sort the mail. I decided if I saw a letter with my name on it, I would try to avoid getting drafted. It finally occurred to me that if a letter came in for me, I could sort it into the wrong bin. When a draft notice was sent to a person, it had a â€Å"call up† date on it. The call up date was the day that the recipient had report to the draft board. By law, there were a certain number of days the recipient had to have received the draft notice before they had to report to the draft board. If a draft letter took too long to get to me, then it would be void. The draft board had to re-issue a call-up letter and I would be safe for a while. Soon enough, a draft letter came addressed for me, I saw it, and slid it into the bin marked Zone 9, which is the west coast. The mail would go to the zone, and then be sorted by state where it would be re-routed to Indiana. Finally, it would be sorted again, more finely, within the streets. By the time it got back to me, it would be too late for me to report to the draft board. I looked around and only saw my coworkers minding their own business. Nobody saw me put the letter in the Zone 9 bin, I was safe. I had to be careful; nobody could know I had done this. Getting yourself out of the draft for the war was against the law, you would be sent to jail if you were caught. If anybody found out that I had intentionally rerouted my draft letter I could get arrested. I couldn’t let that happen. I had three kids and my family needed my income. Later in the mid-1990s, I tried to tell the rest of my family. My wife was there and basically told me to shut up. She didn’t want to know what I had done and she didn’t want anybody else to know either. If she knew, and if somebody asked her, then she might not have any choice but to tell on me. I later told the story to my youngest daughter, so the secret didn’t die with me. I got to go to college and become a doctor. I was excited to get to start my own practice and follow my dream.

Or should I say, â€Å"Usonian art†? Usonian is a new word to me. It does not appear in either the OED or M-W. I read it for the first time in a news story announcing the acquisition of a Usonian house that is being dismantled in New Jersey to be transported and reassembled on the 120-acre grounds of Crystal Bridges. American/Usonian architect Frank Lloyd Wright used the word to refer to his vision for New World architecture that would be free of previous architectural conventions. Wright’s first use of the word was in 1927: But why this term America has become representative as the name of these United States at home and abroad is past recall. Samuel Butler fitted us with a good name. He called us Usonians, and our Nation of combined States, Usonia. Wright misattributed the term Usonian to Samuel Butler. In fact, the word’s first appearance was in 1903, in the writings of James Duff Law. He proposed the term as an adjective to describe the residents of the United States: †We of the United States, in justice to Canadians and Mexicans, have no right to use the title Americans when referring to matters pertaining exclusively to ourselves.† L.L. Zamenhof, the creator of Esperanto, had similar ideas. The Esperanto word for the United States–first used in a speech at the 1910 World Congress of Esperanto in Washington, D.C., is Usono; the Esperanto word for an inhabitant of the U.S. is Usonano, and the adjective is usona. Wright’s â€Å"Usonian homes† were designed to be affordable to middle-income families; they were small, single-story dwellings without a garage or much storage. Wright coined the word carport to describe the covered unenclosed space in which to park the family car. Jacobs House, thought to have been the first of about sixty Usonian homes designed by Wright, was built in Madison, Wisconsin in 1937. The buyer, Herbert Jacobs, challenged Wright to design and build a home for $5,000. Using recycled bricks, Wright kept construction costs to $5,500. Note: In 1937, the average annual wage in the U.S. was $1,788; the average cost of a new house, $4,100; the average price of a new car, $760, and annual tuition at Harvard University, $420. Perhaps speakers in the United States who wish to avoid offending the other inhabitants of North and South America by using the word American to refer to themselves alone could soothe their consciences by adopting the word Usonian. To try it out, I played around with some movie titles: A Usonian Werewolf in London Captain Usonia Usonian Beauty Usonian Graffiti Usonian Pie Usonian Psycho Usonian Reunion Usonian Hustle The change would take some getting used to. But then, since so many people are complaining nowadays that the country is not what it once was, maybe it’s time to adopt a new demonym. Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology Today Chirag Patel The world has come very far with respect to technology. In reality, technology, social media, and smart phones have breached the mainstay in our everyday lives in a short period of time. Gone are the days of cassette and VHS tapes. Gone are the days of typewriters and cursive handwriting. Those outdated technologies have been replaced with tablets, smartphones, and social media websites like Facebook. The same types of technologies have found its way into healthcare. Lambert, K., Barry, P., Stokes, G. (2012) state that, â€Å"Social media has infiltrated all of our lives both personally and professionally.† For better or for worse these technologies have blended into our everyday lives with no end in sight therefore, knowing they aren’t going away and how we use them will say as much about ourselves and as society as a whole. Today’s technologies allow us to be more connected to one another. Both patients and healthcare providers have information available at their fingertips including a patient’s personal health information (PHI). On concern could be stated as such, â€Å"How safe are today’s technologies and will patient’s personal health information be compromised?† The U.S. Department of Health and Human services created HIPPA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act). HIPPA is a federal law that protects medical information of patient’s and is enforced by the Office of Civil Rights. According to Lambert, K., Barry, P., Stokes, G. (2012), â€Å"The use of social media may expose professionals and healthcare entities to liability under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) as well as individual state privacy laws. HIPAA, as modified by the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), governs the permitted use and disclosure of PHI by covered entities, including hospitals, physicians and other healthcare providers. The HITECH Act provides breach notification requirements and expands various requirements to business associates.† So why take the risks? Like anything in this world sometimes you have to take the good with the bad. A few advantages of today’s technologies and social media sites include accessibility. Patients can now play an active engagement in their health care. Social media and various apps allow an individual to do their own research on their conditions. It can give a patient a feeling of empowerment when otherwise they would feel helpless. Social media and varying apps allow for individuals to connect with support groups and message boards that can lend much needed empathy from people who are going through similar situations. We’ve heard the stories of bullying on Facebook but on the flip side there are stories of triumph and support when used in a way that garners sympathy and empathy. Facebook can be both an advantage and disadvantage depending on how it is used. Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers have advantages as well. They too can have the latest research and decision making support tools available to them at palm of their hands. Access to real time information such as the latest prescription recall or access to the most recent white paper of medical breakthroughs benefits both the healthcare provider and ultimately the patient. This collective online and mobile brain trust allow for healthcare providers to create robust medical strategies that can help in the decision making. Online and smart phone resources include mobile apps like Epocrates  ®, Medscape, and even AHRQ ePSS an app designed by the United States Department of Health Human Services (HHS). Online communities’ such as American Medical Association provide resources from varying topics including: managing your practice; medical ethics; legal issues; and career development. In general, most individuals prefer to keep their health status confidentiality hence, the patient-doctor confidentiality relationship. But with smartphones and use of social media the totality of a person’s health information could be vulnerable if safeguards are not in place. Solomon, P., et al. (2012) suggests that healthcare providers who have access to patient information made aware of strategies and facility policies in order to safeguard patient privacy. They should also be mindful and place themselves in a situation where access can be vulnerable i.e. leaving a computer on and unsecure. Solomon, P., et al. (2012) state emphatically that â€Å"Confidentiality is a legal right for clients as well as a professional ethical responsibility of providers.† A break in trust serves to weaken the relationship between the healthcare provider and the patient. Let’s go back to our original scenario. The nurse worked a night shift while her friend attended a concert. The lead singer of the concert the nurse missed is now her patient. At the end of her shift, what does she do? Our group chose the following conclusion: You go on Facebook, on your day off, and talk about the night you had at work and how you didn’t really feel as bad having to miss the concert, because you actually got to meet Jerod in person and even â€Å"Got his number!† You then post a picture of Jerod on Facebook and Instagram, figuring that most of your contacts would never recognize him anyway. It’s your day off and your personal time, so no harm, no foul, right? The scenario above is a plausible outcome in the world with which we live in. However, there are a lot of things wrong with the nurse’s line of thinking. It is not unreasonable for the nurse to think that her personal Facebook page is her private business. However, in the New York trial of Romano v. Steelcase (2010) the Supreme Court stated that, It is reasonable to infer from the limited postings on plaintiffs public Facebook ® and MySpace ® profile pages that her private pages may contain material and information that are relevant to her claims or that may lead to the disclosure of admissible evidence. To deny defendant an opportunity to access these sites not only would go against the liberal discovery policies of New York favoring pretrial disclosure, but would condone plaintiffs attempt to hide relevant information behind self-regulated privacy settings.† In other words, what the nurse posts on her Facebook could be used against her for several reasons 1). The p hoto was taken while she was working, 2). The photo violates a patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality and 3). By violating the patient’s right to privacy and confidentiality she could be setting herself for termination of employment and/or criminal or civil violations. Those are possible consequences that may prove costly in the long run. The nurse should stop and ask herself if the notoriety would be worth losing her reputation and career over. In summary, there are many advantages and disadvantages to smartphones and use of social media. Advantages include active engagement for patients in their health status; readily available resources in real-time; and ease of use and accessibility for all users both front-end and back-end. Some disadvantages include lack of privacy; accountability for posts on personal social media sites; and data integrity and vulnerability. Do the Pro’s outweigh the Con’s? One can only say that training, awareness, and professional and ethical responsibilities should dictate an individual’s actions. My Experience with Technology

I have never really thought about how much I depend of technology. We got our first family computer when I was about 9 years old. At the time my brother was a computer geek (still is) and he would go buy the computer books that had programs in them where you had to type everything out to get a game on the computer to play. So when I would help or when he was teaching me, we would mix some of the programs up and see if we could come up with anything. Then it was to BBS’. That opened a whole new world!We could meet people online without actually meeting them. Now its becoming more and more complexed.. Now there is so many programs out there it’s hard to keep up. I have taught myself just about everything I do on the computer. I know Microsoft Word, Windows, Adobe reader and those are just the ones I can remember off hand.. I am pretty comfortable learning new programs and look forward to it. At this time the only one I can think of that my hinder me is Excel. Since I have only used it once I am not 100% comfortable with it yet.But I will be by the time this class is over. While I worked as a manager at a pet store we used a program called Campbell, it would keep track of the employees hours, what we sold in the store and everything in between. While I was at Staples I was learning all kinds of programs and applications. At this time the only thing that comes to mind that I would have a concern about would be not being able to ask a question and getting an answer right away. I look forward to this class and learning new applications that I can use on the computer.

Today, the customers who did not prefer to just watch movies at the old-fashioned movie halls had the option of going into multiplexes which offered more than one movie show at a single time, along with the option of spending time at multiple shops or restaurants at the same time within the same complex. This was designed so that the customer need not travel from place to place in search of different products – but could have it at one place. With this, the businesses tried to replicate the weekend holiday concept of the West where an entire family could spend a day out engaging itself in watching movies, shopping and eating out. To further this aim, Green-Valley Megastores had invested in multiplexes with floor space varying from 20,000 square feet to 40,000 square feet in prime locations in different cities. The shop-space was then leased out to different brands—who would sell their products within the multiplex. Thus, there was a wide variety of products in a single multiplex—ranging from dress material (which itself had different varieties of ethnic wear, western wear, leather accessories, sunglasses, fine jewelry, and saris) to shoes, electronics, toys, groceries and foodstuff, etc. In terms of product offering, these shops within Green-Valley offered a wide choice to their customers. Not only did Green-Valley offer the finest brands available in India, but it also offered a world-class ambience and service, with the widest choice. A customer could browse through the offerings to their hearts content without any pressure of buying through serene ambience in the classy glass and marble interiors designed by international architects. There was enough  space for them to rest, take a break, have refreshments while shopping and then continue again. Staff at Green-Valley While the shops within each Green-Valley Store had its own staff, Green-Valley maintained its own staff to take care of housekeeping (cleanliness of public space like lobbies, staircases etc.) manage the car park, and provide security services. The staff at Green-Valley was trained to be unobtrusive; they were supposed to be present and vigilant at all times and respond to a specific customer request only when the customer required. They were there to help one make a choice or serve quietly and efficiently. With constant in-depth training, the Green-Valley staff was required to offer service to all customers with a positive attitude, pleasant disposition, and good communication skills Organizational Structure Each store was managed by a store-in-charge who was supported by four managers. The different managers took care of security, housekeeping, services and accounts. The staff strength for security, housekeeping and services varied from store to store based on the requirements. While the housekeeping took care of the general cleanliness of the stores, services department took care of the maintenance of the lifts, electrical equipment, fire-fighting equipment etc. Both the housekeeping department and the services department relied on contractual staff instead of permanent employees. Performance Appraisal for Megastores’ employees Performance appraisal for the store employees was carried out on an annual basis. Each of the employees were evaluated by their superior (refer Figure 1). The store-in-charges of different stores were evaluated by the Regional Managers. The Regional Managers were in turn appraised by the General Manager (Operations) who used to be located at headquarters. The regional managers had targets in terms of business development – getting new customers for floor space in the mega-stores. They had to achieve the targets in terms of lease rent from the stores in their regions. For the store-in-charges the nature of job was more of managing the facility for their customers. Each store had two categories of customers – the tenants and the shoppers. It was the responsibility of the store –in-charge of a Mega-store to ensure highest quality of service to both the categories. Performance Appraisal Process Only those employees who had completed a year in the organization were eligible for performance appraisal. There was no appraisal for the contractual staff or part-time employees. The appraisal process was carried out for all the eligible employees simultaneously in the February to March period. The appraisal process was initiated by a meeting conducted by the Store-in-charge where the announcement of the appraisal process was made. It was mandatory for all eligible employees to attend the meeting. During the meeting the eligible employees were informed individually about the date of his / her performance appraisal. The employees are asked to be prepared for any sort of situations or questions during the appraisal. As an important step of their career, employees took the appraisal interview seriously. Stage 1: Self appraisal This was the first step in the appraisal process at Green-Valley, where an employee has to rate himself from 1 – 6 where 1 is the lowest and 6 the  highest grade. The employee was handed over a form with following five parameters (refer Table A). The parameters were based on the important aspects of his/her responsibility in Green-Valley and had different weights. The employee had to grade himself/ herself on those parameters. Stage 2: Assessment by Appraisal Committee The appraisal interviews were carried out by an Appraisal Committee that was formed for each store. The members in that committee were the Store-in-charge and two HR managers from the headquarters. The committee would carry out interviews of the employees and based on the interviews would give their assessment of performance. On a single day nearly 4-5 employees were appraised. The committee would start the interview using the self-assessment as the basis, probing reasons why a particular employee had rated himself 6. In most cases employees used to rate themselves on the higher side—typically either 5 or 6. For each of the parameters, the appraisal committee had a set of questions which would examine the employee. For example, reliability would be probed with questions like: 1.Where were you when so and so incident took place in the store? 2.If a customer has forgotten her purchases in the lobby – how would you locate the customer to give it back to them? The appraisal committee would make its own assessment and give marks on the 1 to 6 scale. Stoker wrote Dracula to challenge the views of the late 19th century era. Sexuality and its references were seen as taboo in The Victorian Era. Stoker’s background including childhood sickness, college athletic career, and interests in the supernatural found in the various folklore along with influence from his mentor Walt Whitman and the Enlightenment Era lead to strong characteristics in main protagonists such as Van Helsing. While his contrasting views on sexuality by describing it in a violent manner and emphasizing the desiring and lustful feelings of humanity. Stoker’s athletic career influenced the characteristics of his main hero in his novel, Dracula. Stoker was born under the Protestant denomination in a town near the capital of Ireland.
